Taigh Chearsabhagh is a multi-award winning Museum and Arts Centre based in Lochmaddy, on the North-East side of the Isle of North Uist. Locate were commissioned first to lead a feasibility study into potential extension works. Scottish Arts Council funding was attained and Locate have since developed the Art Studio extension to completion in December 2007.
The wider project involves the integration of a number of fairly disparate requirements reflecting the many areas of interest at the Centre. A purpose built store will house and make more accessible an important local collection whilst the Artists’ Studio will allow resident Artists, Craftspeople and Students to devote more time on site. A new and dedicated Education Room will give the extensive education programme the space it needs while a multi-media space, extended office accommodation and a re-worked and enlarged entrance area and shop will all improve the facilities generally.
The completed Artist’s Studio extends onto the beach and offers a new and distinctive face from across the water. The low energy timber frame design has been developed with King Shaw Associates to ensure an efficiently structured and serviced set of proposals with Ralph Ogg and Partners providing cost control and guidance.
