Following a discussion at the Green party conference in Edinburgh, Chris was asked to undertake a study for the MRC (Medical Research Council) funded Social and Public Health Sciences Unit in Glasgow’s West End. Currently located in four adjacent Victorian sandstone terraced homes, the Unit comprises some 80 staff housed in very draughty cellular offices suffering from a variety of environmental and comfort problems.
Commissioned specifically by the active Green Group within the Unit, Chris looked at management, energy, health and resources issues focussing mainly but not exclusively on building related sustainability aspects.
A number of prioritised recommendations were made all cogniscent of the need to remain in harmony with the building’s listed status. If all recommendations were followed, it is likely that the energy costs of the property could be more than halved with concomitant benefits in comfort, health and resource use. |
