Isle Martin is a small uninhabited island close to Ullapool. It was inhabited as recently as 1999 when the RSPB gifted the island to the communities of Lochbroom and Coigach who set up the Isle Martin Tust to manage the island and seek a sustainable future for the island while conserving its rich heritage.

There are four run-down houses on the island and the Trust’s brief asks for guidance for refurbishing these buildings as sustainably as possible, considering likely sources of materials and the difficulties of working on an island with limited access options.

A separate report has been prepared on the potential for a significant renewables infrastructure and in addition the refurbishment strategy needs to take cognisance of these strategies and potential. Both existing water supply and sewage disposal arrangements will require a complete overhaul and the previous arrangement of electrical generation by diesel generator will be reviewed.
