Locate have been commissioned to design a contemporary styled house on a tight site in the village of Edrom in the Scottish Borders.

The site is constrained on three sides and overshadowed somewhat but has wonderful views to the West over a vast arable landscape. We have opted to place the Living quarters on the first floor to be able to take advantage of these views and to effect a sense of space and light.

Encouraged in particular to keep things simple, we have pared back the design and on a tight budget have worked hard to ensure that the spaces, whilst compact, will feel spacious and variable to maintain interest, as well as connecting the occupants to the garden and wider landscape.

The design is characteristically low energy with a timber framed ‘breathing wall’ and a mix of timber and rendered external surfaces. A fully glazed entrance hall and sun room above will bring light into the centre of the building, solar panels and a wood stove will provide the water and space heating. Planning permission was gained and we are on the cusp of acquiring Building Warrant Approval (Feb 2010).
