Barrhill is a relatively remote area of South Ayrshire between Girvan and Newton Stewart. With a population of around 1000 spread over 200 hectares, the area is suffering from a falling and ageing population. A development association, first  formed in 2006 and now incorporated as Barrhill Community Interest Company, has been active in developing a range of proposals to help improve and develop the area.

Two of the seven themes in the Community Action Plan are to do with improving Community Facilities and Energy Conservation and Generation. Locate have been engaged to offer advice regarding the refurbishment of various Community Halls and a number of ‘hard-to-insulate’ homes around the area as part of a suite of works funded by the Climate Challenge Fund.

Locate have prepared a report to aid the refurbishment of the Barrhill Memorial Hall, see right (being re-designed by Collective Architecture), offered guidance on energy supply, and later in February 2010 will visit again to look at a number of domestic and community properties to offer further advice on energy conservation.
